Sometimes I get hit with an idea, a raging notion to undertake some project. This photo sparked my creativity this week.
Less than 24 hours later, I had the finished product.
It was so fun I made another to coordinate with a quilt and toy block for a baby shower gift.

I was determined to re-create the fabric soccer ball. I mean, it's just a combination of pentagons and hexagons - how hard can it be?
I had a hexagon from the boys' math shapes to use as a pattern. I worked and worked but couldn't figure out how to attach six hexagons together but get a pentagon in the middle.
Then the phone rang.
My dad happened to call about something else, and I mentioned it to him. Logical engineer that he is he said I needed to start with a pentagon and attach the hexagons. Duh!
I was left with the question of how to create and equal-sided pentagon. My dad had some ideas and coupled with a visit to Wikipedia I got step-by-step instructions. Armed with a 7th grade era compass and kindergarten pencil, I measured and circled and replicated what Euclid discovered in 500 BC.
I'm already dreaming of other scraps in my stacks....if only I could find some more time.
The balls turned out really cute. Great idea especially with the block. I looked about ordering some similar blocks off Etsy for Eden for Christmas and they are not cheep. Good job! I had a similar problem with the hexagon/pentagon when we did Gabe's soccer ball cake last year. I don't know that we ever got it exactly right.
