We braved the cold to enjoy the city's Holiday Starlight Parade last night. The boys wore their pjs as long underwear beneath a couple of layers of clothes and their coats and hats.
The turnout was lower than normal, more likely due to the fact that undefeated Alabama was playing Florida in the SEC tournament rather than due to the weather. Whatever the case, we had a good spot behind an SUV that blocked the wind.
Matthew was snug as a bug in a rug: turtleneck and shirt, fuzzy footed sleeper, jacket with hat & hood, fleece blanket, and my fleece jacket; so cozy he fell asleep.

We received candy in abundance and cookie cutters from Publix. There were no comments about the "princesses" but the boys were greatly impressed with the fire engines, police cars and ambulances. Most exciting of all was the extra large recovery truck that was towing a flat bed truck with people and presents. For a moment I was worried when I heard the aforementioned truck playing the Alvin & the Chipmunks song, but the thrill of seeing such an exciting vehicle counteracted hearing Dave's yell.
After an hour or so Stephen announced he was ready to go home.

Although they didn't hand out coffee and doughnuts like the Christmas parade in Knoxville, we all had a pretty good time.
Looks like you guys are as crazy as us, and oh I remember Gabe wearing that coat that Stephen has on. In fact it came from a family that has four boys so, it's been through a lot. You guys get better stuff than we did at our parade. We did get some cookies and Nae got a scarf from one of the tv stations but the only candy was dumdums and candy canes (which my kids don't eat.) Fun! Fun!
ReplyDeleteWe'll trade. Our boys love "tootsie dum dums" as they call them. Actually, we got a mini Moonpie, star crunch, fudge round, christmas-tree shaped brownie, and 6 regular size bags of Dark Chocolate Peanut M&Ms (Andrew ate all the good stuff and we sent the M&Ms to Doug's office today).
ReplyDeleteCan't believe you braved the cold AND that Matthew managed to fall asleep with all the noise. The parades around here just don't sound like they would hold a candle to the ones you and Clara saw. I don't even think they are allowed to throw out candy anymore due to some past injuries.
ReplyDeleteBeware of the Boy Scouts - I think they try to use the crowd for target practice. Maybe there's a rule about that here b/c for the most part the candy was handed to us by an adult. I guess it pays to live close to Brach's, Little Debbie, and Moonpie facilities.
ReplyDeleteDoug is the real parade connoisseur (had to consult the dictionary for that one). He was disappointed that there weren't many bands. It seems Philly, MS parades feature at least 3 separate bands. Poor Richlands just had one, but I remember thinking it was great!
