Two weeks ago we had the privilege of jumping on a plane and heading to Boston for a long weekend courtesy of our free tickets from D.C.
It seems like a lifetime ago now; I'm glad I can travel back in pictures.
Boston is a lovely city architecturally speaking, full of graceful buildings and beautiful parks and tiny gardens hidden in small backyard nooks.
But it is also full of history and we spent a day making our way around the major sites of the birth of our nation, including (of course) the Old North Church (I still remember memorizing that Longfellow's poem in 3rd grade)
and the Bunker Hill monument.
We made the mistake of hitting this attraction late in the afternoon after hours and hours of walking. We survived the 293 step trek to the top and were rewarded with a beautiful panoramic view of the city.
There was also the required hunt for the Make Way for Ducklings locations (although we forgot to actually find the statue commemorating the book).
And since we've read lots of books about Benjamin Franklin, we found the street where he was born.
The U.S.S. Constitution had just been put in dry dock for repairs and was opening to the public the day after we left so we had to admire her from afar. The museum was open, however, and we learned a lot about life aboard Old Ironsides.
The highlight of the trip was a whale watching trip along the Massachusetts coast (we actually traveled toward Cape Cod and were able to see the Pilgrim Monument is one squinted very hard.
There were rough seas going out, and we were thankful to not be seasick.
We were instructed to look for waterspouts, and several cries came from the other side of the ship (out of our viewing range). We saw three different types, and the last pair gave us an up-close look.
The skies cleared for our ride inland, and the views were incredible.
We enjoyed a Red Sox game (they lost) and lots of good food: pasta and pizza at what I'm sure was a mafia-run eatery; lobster rolls; cannoli; gelato.
But best of all, we got to spend several days with uninterrupted conversations and in comfortable silence, just being together. What a special gift!
