The Fourth

What's the Fourth without some kind of festivity?

The last time we braved a major gathering at the Fourth was when Josie was a month old
Either the weather or the hassle has kept things a little more low key.

While Doug and I prepared dinner, Jonathan eagerly decorated menus featuring such delicacies as Firecracker Hamburgers, Uncle Sam Hotdogs, Celebratory Cole Slaw, Fabulous Fourth Freedom Fries, USA Watermelon, Tax Payer Tea, & Liberty Lemonade.

We decided to host our former neighbor for pie and ice cream and fireworks
(she used to come over and watch when she lived across the street).

At the last minute, I invited a few more neighbors and it was an official party.

We moved all the back porch furniture to the front yard, and collected items of red, white, and blue.

"Can she bake a cherry pie, Billy Boy, Billy Boy?"  Sadly, my first effort was a bust: thick and gummy (I was not going to resort to canned pie filling).  But the apple pie was as good as ever.

A couple of days before, we headed to the country store on the county line to buy fireworks.  Two of the boys brought their own money to spend.  Jonathan chose tanks.

It was a simple and sweet gathering of friends and neighbors, just what the 4th should be.
