The Creek, Fall Edition

During our morning walks, the kids have been begging to go down to the creek.  I said, "No," knowing full well that we'd have a hard time getting back home for the three Rs (but secretly, I really didn't want to walk all that way through tall, dewy grass - yuck!).

But cooler afternoons, when the dew has dried, are perfect so we ventured down to toss rocks.

Water is absolutely mesmerizing.  Why?

All ages are drawn and fascinated by the mindless act of tossing rocks, hearing the plunck, watching the splash.

The boys weren't content to just throw rocks, though.  They explored the opposite bank (which, of course, required crossing the water) and planned a bridge.

And then I mentioned The Tree.

It reminded me of the scene from Robin Hood where Robin and Little John are crossing the bridge at the same time.  I was sure that Matthew could do it.  He was uncertain.  But never one to back down to a challenge if there's a remote possibility he can succeed, he was determined to do it.

While I was busy watching Matthew's Feat of Daring, Katherine ventured forth into (her) previously unexplored territory: the water.

It was all well and good until she hit a deep hole and went under, but thankfully she scrambled back to shore quickly, wet but unharmed.

It's good to be outside.
