Fryday

Gloomy days call for a special treat, and doughnuts have been on my mind of late.  Two of my kids have never tasted a real doughnut, never had the pleasure of a "Hot" Krispy Kreme.  Another son knows what he is missing and mourns the treats of days gone by.  Vicarious tasting lacks reward.

So the challenge around here is to accommodate all our allergies (milk, egg, soy, fish/shellfish, tree nuts/peanuts, sesame) as well as a gluten sensitivity.  Here's what we've tried over the last few days.

Attempt #1:  Okay, I can't seem to find the site at present.

It's a little unfair to rate this recipe as I didn't quite follow the instructions.  They were supposed to rise for 2 hours after being cut out, but my hungry charges weren't going to wait that long so I attempted to speed the process which was probably not a good thing in this case (oh, and I think I accidentally cut the sugar by half).  They were a bit heavy but completely devoured.

Attempt #2:  Amazing Gluten-Free Buttermilk Doughnuts

"They look like the real thing, they taste like the real thing...." said one commenter on the website.  I guess it all depends on your point of view.  These definitely looked and tasted better than the first recipe (which may or may not owe to the fact that I followed the instructions, even while simultaneously making ham biscuits and maneuvering around my husband repairing a broken supply line to the kitchen sink).  They were still pretty heavy as compared to any normal doughnut I have tasted, but the kids loved them.

Attempt #3:  Funnel Cakes from here and here

I was cleaning the kitchen this morning and started to put away the fry daddy when I also started to think about funnel cakes.  Could they be made without egg and milk?  Could they be gluten free?  A quick Google search (love this!!!) led me to a couple of recipes I combined with fabulous results.  The big kids, who were working on a school related LEGO movie, stampeded upstairs to taste.  Thumbs up from everyone!

The aftermath is a lingering smell of grease and feelings of lethargy. The fry daddy will be removed to the garage to gather dust until onion ring season rolls around!
