After a gradual building of the usual ("You sure have your hands full!" and "Is this one a girl?"), I think my last few encounters may have just about pushed me over the edge.
It all started when a guy ask if I was sure I wasn't having twins.
The next day at the grocery store, a well-dressed, elderly woman asked me if the boys were all mine. While I wanted to reply, "No, I picked up a couple of extras for the ride just for fun!", I simply smiled and said yes. She shook her head in reply!!!
Then her son (who must have been at least 60) comes up and asks the same questions: "Are they all yours? Are they all boys? What's the new one - a boy, too?"
I smile, answer, and try to move on; and just when I think he's moving on as well, he returns and says, "You know how this happens, don't you?" That was it."Yes, and apparently we like it," I calmly replied which sent him into a peal of laughter.
And while I wish it had all ended there, I was accosted by another fatherly gentlemen at church on Sunday who had apparently just heard the news. He had the nerve to ask, "Are congratulations in order?"
Once I recovered from my shock I said, "Well, if you believe children are a gift of God then I guess so."
I'm generally not a fan of have slogans, logos, or saying plastered across my chest, but these offerings from Evil Genius Woman at cafepress may just change my mind.
Hilarious! I agree that something about being pregnant just draws out bad comments from people. I can't believe the guy asked if they are all boys. You should have said, "Actually they're girls we just like for them to look like boys." I mean really...I love some of those shirts.
ReplyDeleteI think what you ought to do is print your page and carry some with you at all times! And the next time your receive a "comment" just hand them one!!
ReplyDeleteBelieve me, things haven't changed in 25 years. I can remember one time in particular when we were crossing the street to go into the grocery store, Clara, Carrie and Chrisa were in line and I was as big as I could be with Emma and this woman comes along in her vehicle, stops, looks at each one of the girls and then stops on my stomach and then glares!!!! And you know we always got the opposite comment, "Trying for a boy this time?" My reply was always the same - "No, we weren't "trying" for a boy the other three times either!" I am THANKFUL you girls are having all these babies - eventually we can take over the world - one baby at a time!!!!
