The guests are gone, the decorations are down, the counters and closets have been cleared and cleaned. Taking advantage of an "urge to purge," I started tossing stuff - obnoxious toys, VHS videos, old bills and other paper trails (some going back 10+ years). It was time.

Oh, the discoveries, though: 4.68% APR on our savings account in 1999; grocery bills that totaled $22.16; oil changes that have doubled in cost; a receipt for dinner the day Andrew was born; the major shopping spree at Lowe's when we bought our house; the hospital bill for Stephen.
As a final flourish, Doug insisted on burning all the financial documents, much to the joy of the boys.
They gathered twigs and sticks to feed the flames.
Maybe one day I'll regret not saving a little receipt or two (Doug assures me I won't and he's probably right). I'm pushing back the sentimental thoughts as I relish the uncluttered spaces full of energetic boys, and I smile.
