Coloring Eggs

"Boiling an egg is the simplest of tasks. Indeed, it is so simple that not knowing how to boil an egg is the standard calibration for zero on the scale of culinary sophistication."

-Rising to the Occasion

I found this a little harsh considering I've managed to make it through 31 years of life without requiring a boiled egg, yet I am thrilled that I passed this crucial test.

The boys and I experimented with "natural dyes" to create these colored eggs. The dark brown came from boiling a combination of yellow and red onion skins, the light brown from plain black tea, and the gray/lavendar from Red Zinger tea. (We also tried using dill pickle juice but I forgot the white vinegar that binds the color to the egg). I'm quite pleased with the results.

  1. i'm ashamed to admit I had to get out "Betty Crocker's Cooking Basics" to find out how to boil an egg. Way to go on your natural eggs! Also, we just did the easter rolls at sandi's! I just blogged about it. Thanks for the idea.
