"Will you play a game with me?" asked Matthew.
I sighed a little to myself. It was 2:20 pm. I have this structured routine which calls for rest time from 1-3 pm everyday. With early risers and lots of talkers in the house, I need the breathing room to gather my wits and prepare for the late afternoon assault.
Today was already off. Lunch was later than normal. Then we got caught up in the adventures of the heroines in our latest read-aloud and rest time started later than usual. The morning was productive house-work-wise; semi-productive school-wise; Josie didn't nap.
On the other hand, there was nothing pressing so I said "yes."
I'd like to say it was all pleasant. Two kids quit; one wallowed; the girls fought over a used compact.
As we reached the third hour we had to call it quits in order to heat up leftovers for dinner.
Matthew repeatedly offered money to his nearly-destitute mother (I had substantial property and houses just very little cash), and after we cleaned up everything he came back to say, "Thank you" for playing.
"You are so very welcome, my son." It's something we'll have to do a lot more often.
