Making Much

Generally speaking, making much of something is a bad thing,
but these kids have proven that is not always the case.

We headed to Virginia where there was a beautiful layer of white on the tops of the mountains.

My folks live "in town" where there was nary a flake, but my brother-in-law's parents live in the Artic Circle and there was snow to be found.

Not much, mind you, but enough to make a slope slick and perfect for sledding.

The hill was teeming with a swarm of brightly clothed bodies of various sizes,
all bent on heading down at top speed.

I don't believe anyone has ever had so much fun with so little snow.

De-decorating

It was fun and now it's done.

I truly do like Christmas decorations, but I'm glad to reclaim the precious nine square feet of space in my living room that the tree has occupied.  Until next year....

Drive Thru History, Chattanooga Edition

What to do on a dreary day with hyped-up kids and a stir-crazy husband?

Hit the road for a tour of historic Civil War sites about town.

There was something for everyone: exciting listening material and gorgeous homes to admire while in the van and cannons and views when we stretched our legs.  Just what we all needed.

The Weary World Rejoices

December Photo Project: Day 25

A Blur.  I can't seem to balance being in and among the action and taking good pictures so Christmas moments remain in our hearts and not harddrives.  Still, it was so fun: the kids slowly trickling in from before 6 until 8; Jonathan's roller coaster ride of emotions over gifts; the girls dressed in their finery; the big boys with new LEGO sets; and Matthew's sweet thankfulness.  It was a good day.  Merry Christmas!

December Photo Project: Day 24

At 7:30 pm Doug was loading the dishwasher and said, "Why did you buy two bags of decaf coffee?"  I had intended to buy one decaf and the other hi-test, and it would be quite the crisis to have to face six crazed kids on Christmas morning without caffeine.  We immediately called the store and Doug made it there before they closed at 8:00.  All is well.

December Photo Project: Day 16

Buttonholes are still a challenge for me so I was excited to discover this alternative: the embroidered loop.

December Photo Project: Day 15

Ten days 'til Christmas and I head the post office with my complete entourage.  They were reminded that we might have to wait and I detailed what I expected in terms of behavior.  "We know!  You ALWAYS tell us that!"  It was rather uneventful except for running into our first and favorite pediatrician who retired when Matthew was a baby and seeing his delight at our doubled number of kids!

December Photo Project: Day 14

5 dozen Coconut Macaroons in celebration of our pastor's installation.  It was a beautiful service with a full house and a lovely reception to follow.  Here's the recipe if you want to make your own (perfect for the gluten free/dairy free person in your life).

Coconut Macaroons

2 egg whites
1/8 t. salt
3/4 c. sugar
1 t. vanilla
1 1/2 c. unsweetened shredded coconut (more if using macaroon-style coconut)

Beat egg whites and salt until frothy.  Gradually add sugar until peaks form.  Add remaining ingredients.  Bake on 350 for 12-15 minutes.

December Photo Project: Day 13

Why not start in on sewing a Christmas gift?  I've still got 11 days to finish.

December Photo Project: Day 12

The bookends stayed home (Andrew was sick and Katherine too young), but the rest of us went to The Nutcracker.  Unfortunately, it was too dark to capture the looks of amazement on the faces of Jonathan and Josie (the former was very enchanted with the lights and projector which we happened to be seated near and the latter has since been re-enacting the performance), and even the bigger boys enjoyed it.  And, I got the chance to catch up with a dear friend.  Win, win!

December Photo Project: Day 11

Merry Christmas to me!  This angel brought good news of great joy: no more tears over sharpening pencils.  Peace on earth!

Oh, the injustice of being left inside while the big kids go out to play!

December Photo Project: Day 3

I'm too tired to come up with any witty caption for this photo.

It just makes me smile.
