Breathing Room

In addition to not having started a quilt yet, I realized last week that I had really made no preparations for baby.  Zero.  Zilch.  Nada.

Not that much is needed.  We have onesies: neutral, boy, and girl.  We picked up a car seat this weekend.  And for good measure, I bought a box of diapers.

Now math has never been my strong suit, but I figured I could count backwards from 40.

What do you get when you assume???

I was delighted to discover that I had miscalculated weeks, and I have some extra time (at least that's what I'm banking on since there has yet to be a Hamill baby decide to arrive anywhere before and/or on the EDD).  With previous children, this would have sent me to the depths of despair, but for once, I am thrilled with a few extra days to plan and prep and enjoy the wonder of pregnancy.

Overheard

Matthew's advice to Andrew at school time:  If you grow up and you haven't learned anything, then you haven't had a good life.

There Were Two in the Bed and the Little One Said

I don't know what's going on, but none of our children want to go to bed.  There was still much activity when Doug and I turned in for the night.

At 6am, this is what I found: Josie snug in bed beside Matthew with both of her legs stuffed into one leg of a pair of his shorts.

Crunch Time

Never have I waited so long to start on a baby quilt, but with just over six weeks to go, I need to hustle to get it done.  Aside from losing two months of my life to home renovations, I'm having trouble with decision making.  I originally was looking for a way to incorporate at least one fabric from each of the other kids' quilts, both in tribute to all these baby-making years and as a way to use up my stash of miscellaneous prints.  The main trouble is that I just can't decide on pattern.
I toyed for a long time with this one and cut out some banners.

It's such a fun, cute design, but I'm just not sure about how it would be to actually quilt.
Next, I played around with this one and cut out some pieces, too.

It's fun and playful, too, but randomness in design is not my strongpoint,
and I'm not confident I can pull it off.
Now it's back to the drawing board so to speak
(or more like back to searching Pinterest for inspiration).
I'm considering another chevron quilt like this fun one I gave away
(only using a much easier piecing method).
But I like this one.

And this one.

Time's a ticking especially if I'm going to have something to fiddle with during our upcoming road trip.  Any thoughts?

Party Prep

Although Josie's birthday isn't until June 1, we are celebrating early.

Next weekend to be exact.

Which means we must start on our piƱata today.

(I'm a sucker for ice cream - do you think I can find a real cone that size?)

If You Can't Say Anything Nice....

Taking a walk this afternoon, I got the television comment...again.

I shouldn't be surprised.

It was the same neighbor who remarked when I was pregnant with Josie, "Well, maybe it will be another boy so you can have five daughters-in-law to hate you."

One of Those Days

I'm going to dwell on these pictures from an adventure earlier this week and forget today even happened.

If it wasn't one thing, it was another.

The grocery list that didn't get written much less food actually acquired.

The trip to the shoe store on par with that of Alexander in
The Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day.

The child who literally lay down in the floor of Hobby Lobby because he felt so bad.

The arguments, picking, screaming, and general mayhem.

But there was a glimmer of hope late in the afternoon.  Stephen made the observation: If everyone stays being nice, you won't have to call us down all the time.  Oh, if only that knowledge would be put into practice.

Almost Big

I can pretend for another month that this girl is still little.

But truth is, she thinks otherwise and I'm kidding myself - next month, she'll be 2.
