Easter 2013

While there is proof of at least one Easter spent with my paternal grandparents,

all my memories are from Easters spent at Her-too's, my mom's mom.

She would save her large, decorative margarine tubs, dutifully stuff in plastic grass, and fill with all kinds of treats.  The night before (if I happened to slip out of bed) they could be found sitting atop the chest freezer just off the kitchen waiting to be presented on Easter morning.

I'm sure there was ham for lunch, probably scalloped potato casserole, a big pot of green beans (we always had potatoes and green beans) and a jello salad of some variety.  She claimed her kitchen "wasn't big enough to skin a cat" but she always managed to cook up a feast.

The star of the show was her coconut cake.  It was a round layered cake (double or triple, yellow or white?) with 7 minute frosting and a dusting of coconut.  But on top, there was always a little nest made of colored coconut with a few jelly beans and a couple of Peeps carefully watching.  I don't really like jelly beans and can't stand Peeps, but I was always excited when Her-too's cake appeared.

There were new dresses and egg hunts and a service at the local Baptist church complete with a stirring rendition of "Up From the Grave."

This year is a little different.  After a rampant strain of strep invaded the house, we decided to split up.  Doug is gone to his parents with the big boys and Josie in tow.  The little guys and I have stayed put.

I bought a ham and asparagus and sweet potatoes and jello, but there is little enthusiasm for cooking for two guys who don't have much appetite these days.  We didn't dye eggs and I have no plastic ones;  there are no jelly beans or Peeps (although a neighbor did provide a basket of sweets).  It's even rainy.

While these things are sweet and fun and real, their absence doesn't change the real Easter.

Newest Fan Club Member

Levador has a new friend.

Josie followed our plumber around, examining his tools and inspecting his work while Jonathan kept up a running conversation with "Elevator."

Boy, this man is patient.

Shadow Play

Oh, Spring, you are much too fickle.

You tempt us with sunshine and warm temperatures only to turn your back a few days later.

But the cold and gray and rain can't last forever.

And we will seize the sunbeams for the few minutes before dark.

Shadows and silliness.

Just the prescription we need for this rough last week.

LEGO Gondola

Lego City Merry-Go-Round

Welcome to the Lego City Merry-Go-Round (because even minifigures need a fun diversion every now and then).  Turn the handle at the top and you're off on a fun ride; music not included.

Inspired by Matthew; built by Stephen.

Joe Jr.

I needed to sort through all of our hand-me-down shoes, and I knew it would be thrilling for Josie.

Little did I know that the boys would find it equally exciting.

I kept hearing Jonathan saying, "I'm going to try on these damn shoes!" which was a little unsettling for a number of reasons (we don't say that).

Then I realized he was really saying "jam" which he got from my explanation of jelly shoes.  Whew!

I think these will be valuable shots one day, don't you?

Make Your Own: Chocolate Syrup

There's one little boy in our house who always appears in the kitchen in the morning and says:
"I want hot chocolate and marshmallows."
Sometimes he is even cheerful and most polite.

Needless to say, we go through a lot of marshmallows and chocolate syrup.

Noticing we were getting rather low, I went to add it to the shopping list when I happened to turn the bottle around.  I am a bottle reader by nature (thanks to my mom who will read any written words within site) and by necessity (due to numerous food allergies).  Somehow I failed to notice the extras that we were getting.

Just wets one's appetite, doesn't it?  (what is vanillin?)  Thankfully Pinterest once again came to the rescue.  Armed with a new recipe, we just made our own (I did reduce the sugar to 1 cup).

There's no magic ingredient or need to run to the store anymore; a simple combination of sugar, cocoa, water and vanilla.  Five minutes and you're done.

And best of all, it passed the connoisseur's test.

Tootsie

I realized today that this girl is 21 months old - yep, she's marching on to 2!

She's a funny little thing: barely on the charts for both weight and height but more than brimming with self-confidence.

Her bunny "Buppy" is her best friend though Blowout Baby (so named for an unfortunate stain on it's bottom) will sometimes do in a pinch.

She is extremely generous with kisses and hugs even with one less-than-loving brother.

She a perfectly at home rough-housing with the boys and quietly sitting with toys.

She's been missing the outdoors terribly since it's way too cold and muddy for mom to be outside.

She's our sweet Tootsie Pop!
